Vehicle Insurance Laws

It appears that recent vehicle insurance law changes have caused some confusion among motorists.  Motorists can access the entire law (O.C.G.A. 40-6-10) or other laws at Georgia Code

Do I need to keep an insurance card in my vehicle? - Since insurance information can now be obtained by Dalton Officers via their in-car computers or other agencies through the states GCIC terminal, the requirement for keeping a current insurance card is not required.  However, a current card is required and must be made available to an officer if you are involved in a motor vehicle crash.  So the answer to this one is to always keep a current insurance card in your vehicle.

The computer says I have no insurance but I have a card showing coverage - According to the law, policy information cards shall not be sufficient proof of insurance except in a few specific cases.

Things you can do to reduce errors causing you to be stopped by mistake by a law enforcement officer:

  • Verify with your insurance company that the necessary information has been provided to the state.
  • Always keep a current insurance card in your vehicle.  Remember, you must present this to an officer if you are involved in a crash.
