In the past two weeks, several emails have been circulating concerning gang initiations of killing or harming other individuals. The Police Department wants to remind everyone that we have had no information indicating gang violence or initiation activities toward any single or group of individuals.
We are also asking people to refrain from sending or forwarding emails of this nature without first verifying their truthfulness through the police department.
As a result of the recent emails, police personnel have been taken away from normal duties in attempting to respond and follow-up with the thousands of emails received.
"The more time and resources we spend working to dispute these bogus emails, the less time we have to protect the citizens of Dalton", says Dalton Police Chief James Chadwick.
We are asking for people to check the department's Blog site on a regular basis to obtain information about bogus emails that are being circulated. The Blog site provides the citizens a central location where they can obtain up to date current information on a 24 hour basis without having to make an inquiry to a specific officer.
The department's blog site can be reached by going to www.daltonpdblog.org.
Since the tragic homicide on May 28, 2007, several emails have been circulated alleging threats of retaliation, gang initiations targeting specific genders and races, and random violent attacks. The information in these email threads is completely false.
The Dalton Police Department has received no information whatsoever of these kinds of threats. The department has not advised any individual or business to take any extraordinary steps of caution. The department is concentrating on putting more officers on the street, but we cannot work toward protecting the public if we are spending precious resources responding to, literally, the thousands of email recipients that have been included in these erroneous threads.
If you hear of a specific threat, or get an email about it, please call us directly before you forward it to others. We will be happy to verify your information, and lead you to any other crime data you wish to know about.
You may call our public information officer, Chris McDonald, at 706-278-9085, extension 177. You may also reach him by email at cmcdonald@cityofdalton-ga.gov.

The Dalton Police Department released the April 2007 Crime Statistics today. Each month, the department's Records Section compiles a report detailing various crimes. The report from April can be viewed in PDF format by clicking here. As you view the file, the offenses are divided into "Part I", the most serious, and Part II, all others. The criteria for classifying the reports are from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) guidelines. The police department is not required to report this data, but does so voluntarily.
The department normally releases the monthly reports by the tenth (10th) of the following month. This edition of the April report was released previously on the department's city-sponsored webpage. In an effort to provide more informaion, this report will be published on this site monthly effective today. The May 2007 report should be released within the next week.
If you have questions about the documents or posts to this site, please leave comments, or call the department's Public information Officer, Chris McDonald at 706-278-9085, extension 177. You may also reach Officer McDonald by email.
Although the Dalton Police Department has announced the redeployment of officers to address problem areas and issues, other areas of town will not be ignored. The department has a duty to address public safety in all areas of the community.
It is important to note that the shift in personnel, and the additional overtime by current officers, can last for a short period of time. Since criminals do not announce their intentions, the department must, at times, react to crime flare-ups. In order to have meaningful, proactive impact, the department will need to hire additional officers so that all areas of the city have as much presence as possible.
In early 2007, the department recognized a need to increase coverage of patrol beats, and made adjustments so that each beat has at least two patrol officers assigned 24/7. Patrol officers answer a variey of calls, and cover city residences and businesses from the Dalton Airport west to the Farm subdivision, and From the South Bypass north to Dawnville Road. The information below contains a sample of the calls for service in April 2007.
